The LedgerStatement of account · Games 13 & 14

The accounting desk has the paper this week. Averages remain the league's adjusted average(hits − caused outs) ÷ at-bats — and an afternoon is written as a line: the hits are raw, the rate is net, so a 7-for-8 afternoon with two caused outs posts .625. Every score below was reconciled against the standings to the run before a word of this was written. And because this week's cover is an audit, one more house number up front: the Pythagorean expectation is the winning percentage a club's runs scored and allowed would normally earn — PF² ÷ (PF² + PA²), a rule borrowed from baseball — and luck is how far a club's actual record sits above or below it. Readers hunting the deep season reference — draft board, round rooms — will still find it filed in the July 10 archive; the full docket itself returns to the back of this ledger.

Declared closed a week ago, reopened this afternoon with both cards punched full. The desk is contractually obliged to note that the second belongs to a man on the far side of forty who spent five hours running circles around young men under the impression the afternoon was theirs — and who is, by every account, prouder of the average than of the age. Membership is strictly week-to-week: the club closes the moment an out is made.

Ledger Special · The Mike Williams BenchmarkEst. July 24

Above the benchmark: the women outbatting the first round

Baseball has the Mendoza Line. As of this edition, this league has the Mike Williams Benchmark, set at .556 — the current altitude of Michael Williams: first-round pick, captain, shortstop — and every woman batting above it is, by the desk's official arithmetic, outbatting the first round of the draft. The desk congratulates the outperformers and reminds the benchmark that having a league standard named after you is its own kind of immortality.

Remarkable, for men in their condition

Four men whose medical charts read like a park bench and whose batting reads like a scouting report. The desk has examined the files, examined the numbers, and can offer no clinical explanation for the season being assembled on these knees, ankles, and intermittently cramping everything else. (Disclosure: the ward is three-quarters Knudson.)

Ledger Nº 1 · The InvoiceStatement of account

First place, on credit

Stafford's team took first place on the afternoon of July 24 — a 2-0 day closed out in the last two hours — and the accounting desk opens the books on the new leader: fifth of twelve at the plate, the friendliest schedule in the league behind it, and no club further ahead of its own arithmetic. The balance due is +.220, and it grew this week.

Luck = winning percentage minus the Pythagorean expectation (defined in the masthead, up top) — a big positive balance means winning games the run totals don't explain. SOS played = the average of each opponent's winning percentage in its other games. Every line item is computed from the book.
Ledger Nº 2 · The Day's EntriesJuly 24 · North & South

Twelve entries, posted

Two fields, five hours, every final reconciled against the standings to the run. The tags are computed, never editorial: a one-run game is a one-run game, and an upset needs six places of standings daylight between winner and loser.

Ledger Nº 3 · The DebitsCaused outs, itemized

An afternoon in red ink

The league ran up 42 caused outs on the afternoon of July 24 — 21 percent of the season's total damage in 14 percent of its at-bats, a rate of 0.052 per at-bat against the 0.033 it carried coming in. Two records fell on this page alone, both filed in the record book below. The two clubs that kept a clean sheet went a combined 3-1.

One game covers five clubs

Five clubs hold ten wins or better and one game of daylight covers them all: the leader, a half game to Caleb's team, then three clubs level a game back. Below the line, four and a half games of open water.

Mv = places moved this afternoon. GB = games back, (ΔW + ΔL) ÷ 2 against the leader. Pyth = the Pythagorean expectation — the winning percentage the club's runs would normally earn; Luck = Win% minus Pyth, winning more (or less) than the runs explain. Bat = season adjusted average, with its league rank beside it.

What has been walked, what is left

SOS played = the average of each opponent's winning percentage in its other games, one entry per game played. SOS left = the current winning percentage of the clubs still on the slate. The table sorts hardest-walked first — the leader is at the bottom of it.

Six seats turn over

Half the Dream Team changed in one afternoon — six of twelve seats — and the coed rule needed only one adjustment this week: Violet Barlow's round-eleven seat is earned on value alone, so only Jayla Dockstader's is held by rule.

The whole draft, audited — value = (adjusted average − league .555) × at-bats; true round = value rank dealt into rounds of twelve; Move is measured against the July 17 edition's true rounds. Shortstops are tagged SS: their price bought defense this table cannot see, so read their red entries gently.

The bill collectors' hour

The league's book already names July 31's twelve games, and the last hour is the whole story: the leader plays Caleb's team at 6:30 — the rematch — then closes the day against Jeremy's team, the one club it has never met.

The July 31 card as the league's book lists it — two fields, six hourly starts, every club playing twice.

Methodology: stats and standings harvested from cpsoftball.com with the July 24, 2026 data (single "Current" season); the game book covers the full schedule, and the 84 completed finals reconcile exactly against the standings — every club's runs for, runs against, and record match to the digit, which is the only reason this paper trusts harvested scores. Adjusted average = (H − CO) ÷ AB, verified exact on all 144 rows; the league line stands at .555. The afternoon = games 13 and 14, played July 24, joined on (team, draft pick) between the July 17 and July 24 snapshots; an afternoon's rate = (ΔH − ΔCO) ÷ ΔAB, and the swing is that rate minus the player's own season line at July 17. Hits above the book (HAE) = ΔH − ΔCO − ΔAB × own prior line — the Bat of the Afternoon statistic; the Anvil is the worst swing on 4+ afternoon at-bats; the Vacuum counts afternoon caused outs with ties broken by season total; the Ghost is the highest-ranked player with zero afternoon at-bats; the Iron Week is most afternoon at-bats; the Ladder and the Chute are the extreme league-rank moves. The Rebound Ledger's cohort = swing ≤ −.300 on 4+ at-bats in games 11–12; REBOUNDED = an afternoon rate above the player's own July 17 line. Form glyphs read each of the last three periods against the player's own line with a ±.050 deadband. Games back = (ΔW + ΔL) ÷ 2 against the leader; streaks and game records come from the game book. The Pythagorean expectation is the winning percentage a club's runs scored and allowed would normally earn — PF² ÷ (PF² + PA²) — and Luck is the actual winning percentage minus that: the wins (or losses) the run totals can't account for. SOS played = the mean of opponents' winning percentage in games not against the club, one entry per game; SOS left = the mean current winning percentage of the clubs still on the slate; the schedule-alibi audit (in the July 17 archive) is why no batting number on this page is ever schedule-adjusted. The chase lists the top four averages on 15+ at-bats ("back" = average gap × own at-bats); crown history uses 10+ at-bats per snapshot; weekly records keep their 10+ at-bat gate, and the records board is recomputed from every period every edition — a published-board tripwire flags any upstream data revision. The arcs chart plots each club's season adjusted average at all five snapshots, x-axis spaced by real dates, y-axis .400–.640; three clubs are emphasized in color (validated for contrast and color-vision separation in both light and dark modes), every line is direct-labeled, and the full numbers sit in the table beneath it. Value = (adjusted average − league .555) × at-bats; true round = value rank dealt into rounds of twelve; the Dream Team takes best value per round under the league's two-women coed rule. Shortstops are tagged SS; their draft price includes defense this ledger cannot measure. All numbers are transcribed from analysis.py (run with --history --games --standings --prev-standings, plus --html-afternoon for every table, card, ticket, and the chart on this page) against 0724-stats.csv, 0724-standings.csv and 0724-schedule.csv — nothing is computed by hand.
