Above the benchmark: the women outbatting the first round

Baseball has the Mendoza Line. As of this edition, this league has the Mike Williams Benchmark, set at .556 — the current altitude of Michael Williams: first-round pick, captain, shortstop — and every woman batting above it is, by the desk's official arithmetic, outbatting the first round of the draft. The desk congratulates the outperformers and reminds the benchmark that having a league standard named after you is its own kind of immortality.

• Deborah Timpson cleared the benchmark from six rounds of draft further back. Ephraims Daniel's club spent a seventh-round pick on her; a first was spent on the benchmark. The draft market, the desk observes, continues to misprice women.
• The two biggest draft bargains in the entire league are on this list. Violet Barlow and Maureen Williams both went in the eleventh round and both bat, by the value desk's arithmetic, like fourth-rounders — the two most underdrafted players in the book, of any gender. The coed rule was written to make sure the women were included; the women, evidently, had bigger plans.
• In fairness to the benchmark: shortstop is the league's premium defensive post, and a glove buys things no batting column can see. The desk extends this courtesy in full — and notes, courteously, that Debbie Timpson does not need it.

Remarkable, for men in their condition

Four men whose medical charts read like a park bench and whose batting reads like a scouting report. The desk has examined the files, examined the numbers, and can offer no clinical explanation for the season being assembled on these knees, ankles, and intermittently cramping everything else. (Disclosure: the ward is three-quarters Knudson.)

• Levi Knudson mans shortstop — the most demanding real estate in the league — on two knees the chart lists as weak, hauling a frame the chart lists as generous, and bats fourteenth in the league anyway. The desk has stopped scheduling his follow-ups; he keeps missing them to take extra swings.
• Derrick Knudson has one reliable ankle and zero caused outs all season — 54 at-bats, nothing handed back — which the desk attributes to a man who has learned, the hard way, that sudden movement is a young man's error.
• Nathan Knudson bats through cramps that arrive whole-body and on their own schedule, and still holds a season line comfortably above the league's. Sam Guy was admitted as the control group: no conditions on file, a top-five bat in the league, and two of the day's hottest lines belong to this very ward — the desk regards his chart, blank as it is, as the most suspicious of the four.

First place, on credit

Stafford's team took first place on the afternoon of July 24 — a 2-0 day closed out in the last two hours — and the accounting desk opens the books on the new leader: fifth of twelve at the plate, the friendliest schedule in the league behind it, and no club further ahead of its own arithmetic. The balance due is +.220, and it grew this week.

The statement

• The decisive entry is the 11–10 escape past Caleb's team at 6:30 — the head-to-head that moved first place. The schedule has the two clubs meeting twice more before the season closes, so the account stays open.
• The audit trail, for the record: a slate played of .423, softer than anyone else's, while the batting desk ranks the leader fifth. The Gauntlet below carries the full schedule ledger — and the audit desk settled in July that a soft slate buys no batting average. Wins are another department; the luck is billed separately.
• The account history: opened July 10, a first installment collected July 17 — the balance carried forward stood at +.200 — and re-inflated this week, with first place attached as collateral.

Twelve entries, posted

Two fields, five hours, every final reconciled against the standings to the run. The tags are computed, never editorial: a one-run game is a one-run game, and an upset needs six places of standings daylight between winner and loser.

The Disclaimer

• Every table in this paper obeys the league's book. That is the discipline of the operation, and the desk has never enjoyed it less than it does today. The book says Claude's team won the afternoon's upset. Fine. Entered. For the record, then — purely, calmly, for the record: in the course of that game a ball left the yard — left it, cleared it, gone — and came back a foul. The batting club objected. Some on the other side agree it was a bad call. The umpire acknowledged as much — which leaves the ruling entered in the book over the recorded doubts of, among others, its own author. Horatio's team should have won. The ledger is not permitted to care. The score stands as officiated, because that is what a ledger does, and the desk prints it with complete neutrality — a neutrality unrelated to which club the editor bats for — and will not be raising the matter again, except in every future edition in which these two clubs appear on the same line.

An afternoon in red ink

The league ran up 42 caused outs on the afternoon of July 24 — 21 percent of the season's total damage in 14 percent of its at-bats, a rate of 0.052 per at-bat against the 0.033 it carried coming in. Two records fell on this page alone, both filed in the record book below. The two clubs that kept a clean sheet went a combined 3-1.

• Horatio's club posted +10 — the worst team debit the book has recorded, and it billed immediately: an upset loss, a slide to third, and the club batting lead surrendered the same afternoon.
• Charles Williams itemized +4 by himself — a league record — on the very day his club took first place; the champagne comes with paperwork. And the editor of this page went 13-for-14 with three caused outs, an afternoon the desk has entered under assets and liabilities alike. He declines to recuse himself from either column.
• The caused-out tragedy, act five: Gideon's team posted one, tied for the day's gentlest line, and the remission entered its second week. The season total on that roster, 25, remains the league's worst; the ledger notes only that it barely moved.

Held — against a perfect pursuit

Sefton Dockstader kept the crown at .809, a second consecutive edition at the top of the page. The pursuit closed anyway: Gideon Hammon batted a perfect afternoon — his membership card is filed near the top of the page — and now stands 0.9 hits back.

The chase

• Cuervo Timpson moved up without swinging. The two-time crown-holder did not take an at-bat — he is the Ghost of the Weeklies below — while last edition's runner-up, Paul Hammon, slid to sixth on the league table. Third place, earned from a folding chair.

The awards ledger

Every award is computed from the book. Bat of the Afternoon went to Shem Hammon: 11-for-13 off a twelve-at-bat season, worth +3.4 hits above his own line, with a forty-one-place climb up the league table folded into one afternoon.

Three in red ink, one in Cawley

The afternoon rewrote most of the debit side of the record book: the worst team week (.356, Michael's team, past the .421 it replaces) and both caused-out marks — the club and player records itemized on the debits page. The one entry in black ink is the best family week the book has ever taken.

• The new family record belongs to the Cawleys — all three of them, two of whom sat. Lorenzo Cawley went 4-for-5, Seth and Sophia Cawley never batted, and the smallest family in the ledger took the family title at .800 with one bat swinging. It breaks the Knudson .700.
• Two marks survived by inches: the coldest week, where Benjiman Hammon Legrands' .182 stopped short of the .154 floor, and the best team week, where Sefton's club batted .653 into sight of a mark set only last edition.
• One record grew on the games side: Jeremy's team ran the longest win streak in the season's book a game further before Caleb's team ended it in the day's final hour. The streak stands as the record; the streak-holders left with a loss.

The season, drawn

Every club's season line at all five snapshots, June 12 through July 24. Three arcs carry color this edition: the new leader's, the crown-holder's club, and the club that just surrendered the batting lead.

• Horatio's arc turned for the first time all season. The climb ran .565 to .616 without a single down snapshot; July 24 printed .599, the first number lower than the one before it.
• Jeremy's club has surrendered the most altitude: a .621 peak on July 10 reads .576 two snapshots later — and the standings have barely noticed yet.
• Sefton's club is the only line that ends near its beginning: the .626 opener sagged to .590 for two snapshots and has recovered to .600 — now the best season line in the league.

Ten names, second hearing

Everyone who fell 300 points or more on four-plus at-bats in the July 17 games gets re-read against their own line. Ten qualified: three rebounded, six fell again, one sat.

• The two names the last ledger carried forward both answered. Lincoln Wood went 6-for-7 with a caused out and climbed into the Dream Team's round-twelve seat; Pauline Timpson went 4-for-7 and moved up a place. Their hearings are closed.
• Sean Hammon rebounded — 3-for-6, a .500 afternoon against the .429 he had fallen to. The file stays closed; the desk notes the pulse and moves on.
• Becky Wood fell again by the thinnest definition the column allows: 1-for-4, exactly her own line. The 144th pick files another extension on "still technically a bargain."

Twelve club pages in standings order. The card carries the club's account — record, games back, the afternoon's results, the luck line — and the roster runs in draft order with each player's afternoon, swing, season line, league rank, and form across the last three periods.

One game covers five clubs

Five clubs hold ten wins or better and one game of daylight covers them all: the leader, a half game to Caleb's team, then three clubs level a game back. Below the line, four and a half games of open water.

• The arithmetic's favorite sits third. By its runs, Horatio's team should own the league's best record (.753) — best run difference (+85), most runs scored, fewest allowed — and it trails by a game anyway. The ledger's explanation is filed on page one.
• The league still owes Ephraims Daniel's team. Its luck reads −.233, the worst in the book; it batted .627 on the afternoon — second-best of the day — and lost twice anyway to run its slide to five.
• Below the line, the day belonged to the risers: Claude's team and Elliot's team each climbed three places — the one on the day's only upset, the other on three straight wins.

What has been walked, what is left

SOS played = the average of each opponent's winning percentage in its other games, one entry per game played. SOS left = the current winning percentage of the clubs still on the slate. The table sorts hardest-walked first — the leader is at the bottom of it.

• Only one contender's run-in avoids the top four entirely: Sefton's team, whose remaining slate reads .333 — the lightest in the league. Ninth-place Boyds Daniel's team draws the heaviest remaining road at .684.
• Caleb's team walks the hardest contender road left — .631, three dates against the top four, two of them with the leader. The invoice's collateral, scheduled.

Six seats turn over

Half the Dream Team changed in one afternoon — six of twelve seats — and the coed rule needed only one adjustment this week: Violet Barlow's round-eleven seat is earned on value alone, so only Jayla Dockstader's is held by rule.

• The dynasty ledger flipped back. The Knudson family average stands at .618 to the Williams .594, restoring the first-family title the Knudsons lost on July 17. The editor, a Knudson, records the finding and offers no further comment.
• Eighty-six players changed true round on the week. The far ends of the churn: Shem Hammon's afternoon was worth three rounds of draft price, and Benjiman Hammon Legrands gave four back.

Back from the archive by the editor's order: every player in the league in true draft order, pick #1 through pick #144, snake turns included. True Rd is where the value math files each bat — value rank dealt into rounds of twelve — Move is how that standing changed on the afternoon of July 24 (▲ climbed toward round one, ▼ fell, = held), Gap is the audit's finding — green cleared the draft price with rounds to spare, = priced exactly right, red booked below cost — and League # is value rank out of 144. The season's totals: 81 picks stand justified, 27 of them priced to the exact round. The heavier lines start a new round.

The bill collectors' hour

The league's book already names July 31's twelve games, and the last hour is the whole story: the leader plays Caleb's team at 6:30 — the rematch — then closes the day against Jeremy's team, the one club it has never met.

• Four first meetings in one afternoon. The schedule saved its strangest introductions for August's doorstep: the leader and Jeremy's team at 7:30, Horatio's team and Gideon's team at 5:30, Elliot's team and Sefton's team at 3:30, Claude's team and Michael's team at 3:30. Six games remain per club.
• The form chart favors the early card: Sefton's team opens against Claude's at 2:30 carrying three straight wins and the crown-holder; Michael's team, fresh off the worst team week in the book, draws the two clubs that just went a combined 4-0.
• The rebound ledger returns next edition with fifteen names already on the docket — this afternoon's collapse cohort is half again the size of the last one.
