Seventeen for seventeen — and the door still said no

Michael Williams came to the plate seventeen times across the two Fridays and hit safely seventeen times — 17-for-17, not an out made at the plate for a fortnight. And the line prints .941, because somewhere in the middle of it he caused one out, and in this league a caused out erases a hit. The house arithmetic he once defined the bottom of has priced his perfection at less than perfect; the man himself has moved on to grander addresses.

Ejection Nº 1: Williams, Tammy

The book reached one hundred and eight games before producing its first ejection, and history will record that it belongs to Tammy Williams of Gideon's team. The desk records the milestone, not the particulars, which remain between her and the umpire. The conduct file notes only a pattern: both of this edition's entries — see the equipment notice below — originate in the same clubhouse, which also holds a share of the league lead in caused outs. The desk prints the pattern and steps back.

The fortnight's only perfect line — 6-for-6 — belongs to a man whose muscles are, functionally, a union shop: they stage whole-body work stoppages without notice, mid-inning, on a schedule known only to their steward — and management batted a flawless fortnight anyway. The physio desk has upgraded his file from QUESTIONABLE to medically unexplained, and notes, with disclosed fraternal interest, that his older and more comprehensively injured brother, Derrick Knudson — a man batting on one reliable ankle, who treats sudden movement as a younger man's error — was out-batted by the cramping party across both Fridays. The league table now seats the little brother directly above Derrick, retaking a family rung the two have traded all summer. The second application ran seventeen punches deep, the longest in club history, and was declined on a technicality the applicant's own league wrote into law. Membership, like family seniority, is reviewed weekly.

Cuervo Timpson took a seat at the leaders' table on the third of July and kept it through every edition since — two of those weeks as the crown itself. This fortnight the register reads 7-for-12, and the front desk records a quiet checkout: no incident on file, luggage carried without assistance, forwarding address of seventh. His remaining property in the building — the hottest-week record, .957 — spent the same fortnight being appraised by the man on the cover, and survived. The suite above is now available. The pressure is included in the rate.

The Dewegeli Divide — drawn where Elliot Hammon bats

From the family record
Karl Franz Dewegeli Jr., a young man in a suit and striped tie, photographed in black and white.
Karl Franz Dewegeli Jr., who left the old country with one good suit — this one — crossed an ocean to stand in the great hall at Ellis Island among that venerable band of brave souls who asked nothing of the new world but honest work and a future for their posterity. From this frame he now keeps his appointed watch over the divide that bears the family name, checking in, as the brave always have, on how his great-grandson Elliot is coming along at the plate. The desk prints the figure below and lets the family settle it privately.

Three weeks ago this paper set a league standard at the altitude of its lowest-batting first-round pick. Its first namesake batted his way off it inside a fortnight; the line now falls to Elliot Hammon — captain, shortstop, and at .548 the new floor of the first round. And an instrument this permanent deserves better than a working title. Out of respect for heritage, it is henceforth the Dewegeli Divide — after Karl Franz Dewegeli Jr., great-grandfather of the man whose average draws it. Great ranges are named for the families that first crossed them; this one is still waiting to be crossed by its own namesake. Eleven of the twelve first-round picks bat .629 or better. The twelfth draws the Divide, which is, after all, a form of drawing the league together.

One bat, of Gideon's team

It had done nothing wrong — the average is the proof

Gideon Hammon — captain, shortstop, second in the batting race — closed the fortnight by breaking a bat in a moment of strong feeling. The family desk appends the genealogy: Gideon is the older brother of the man who draws the Dewegeli Divide, which gives Karl Franz Dewegeli Jr. two great-grandsons in this paper — one holding the league's floor in perfect serenity, the other splintering lumber within a hit of the crown. Composure in this family, the desk observes, runs inverse to batting average. The portrait above keeps its appointed watch, and its counsel.

Charles Williams spent the fortnight on the hot list, in a Dream Team seat, and among the heaviest workloads in the league. His son Ben spent it on the rebound ledger, on the debits page, and — the record will show — in jeans. There is a form for this. The family desk has completed it.

Section Nº 1 · The CrownUnder new management

Sam Guy is the best bat in this league. It's official.

The crown changed hands for the third time this season, and the margin it left is 0.2 hits — a lead you could misplace in a scorer's pencil — but the desk declines to bury this lede: by the only column this paper answers to, the best hitter in the entire league now plays for the club that lost all four games of the fortnight. He shares that clubhouse with his brother, Cuervo Timpson, who spent the same two Fridays checking out of the leaders' table one section up. Sefton Dockstader — champion since July 17, a furious 20-for-28 across both afternoons — still thinned from .809 to .773; arithmetic remains undefeated. Four bats sit within a single hit of each other, one afternoon left.

For Horatio Williams, who would never mention it

Prepared without the subject's cooperation, which was withheld politely.

Two grand slams
One afternoon · August 7 · attested by all present, mentioned by none named Horatio
  • Whereas the book records a .780 season — third in the league, an arm's reach from the crown — and a 14-for-17 fortnight, and every witness the desk could find reports the subject crediting, in order: his teammates, the weather, and the other team;
  • Whereas his club has scored more runs than any in the league and allowed fewer per game than any in the league, and its captain has claimed credit for exactly none of it;
  • Whereas the two blasts commemorated above arrived in a book that keeps no column for them, from a man who keeps no words for them — so the desk prints sworn testimony where the statistics fail, and prints it large;
  • Whereas the ledger's own arithmetic — a Pythagorean expectation of .786, the league's best — insists his club is even better than its standing, an argument the subject cannot be induced to make on his own behalf;

Now, therefore, be it resolved: the desk will do the gloating he declines to do. Let the record carry the numbers, the testimony carry the slams, and the man carry on exactly as he is. So cited.

The awards run long this issue

Every award below is computed over the pooled fortnight — double the usual runway, which the record book in the next section referees with its period labels. One card deserves its frame on the wall: the Ghost goes to the captain and shortstop of the club that took first place — every game of it won while he sat. The desk has never presented this award with more respect, or less sympathy.

Two marks fall, both wearing asterisks

A double-length week bears on the record book unevenly, and the desk refuses to pretend otherwise. Rate records don't care how long the period ran; count records do. So read the board with its period labels showing: every mark carries its span, both of the fortnight's new marks are volume records, and the notes below referee which comparisons are fair.

Section Nº 5 · The DebitsThe caused-out ledger, second notice

The epidemic finds new hosts

The league handed back ninety caused outs across the fortnight — a rate 42 percent above its own season pace coming in, the second straight period in red ink. Elliot's team set the team record — +16 in one accounting period — and the season board now reads a three-way tie at thirty: Gideon's team, sole occupant of league-worst since June, has been joined at the bottom by Elliot's team and Michael's team. Six editions into the tragedy, the original patient is merely tied for worst — which the desk supposes is what recovery looks like around here.

Fifteen names, eight pulses

July 24's collapse cohort — everyone whose swing fell .300 or more on four-plus at-bats — was the largest this ledger has ever carried into a new period: fifteen names. The fortnight's verdicts: eight rebounded, seven fell again, nobody sat. The loudest pulse belongs to Leslie Williams, who followed the cohort's deepest collapse with a fortnight batted well above her own line.

Section Nº 8 · The StandingsThrough August 7 · 18 games each

The mirror: plus four, minus four

Jeremy's team won all four games of the fortnight and rose #5 → #1; Stafford's team dropped three of four and fell #1 → #5 — a perfect mirror, and the only movement in the top half of the table. Beneath it, two clubs ride seven-game losing streaks into the final Friday, and the cellar tripled its season win count in a single fortnight.

Section Nº 9 · The InvoiceSecond notice · account transferred

The account changes hands

Last edition this page billed Stafford's team +.220 for holding first place on the friendliest arithmetic in the league. Collection was swift: three losses in four games, first place vacated, balance written down to +.094. But the account does not close — it transfers. The new leaders arrive carrying the league's highest luck, +.149, and the league's softest slate walked to date. The desk re-addresses the envelope and changes nothing else.

Terms: luck = winning percentage minus the Pythagorean expectation (defined under the standings) — a large positive balance means winning games the run totals don't explain. SOS played = the mean of each opponent's winning percentage in its other games. Every line above is computed from the book; the desk adds nothing but the stamp.

Section Nº 10 · The GauntletStrength of schedule, walked and waiting

What was walked, what remains

The season-long pattern holds to the end: Ephraims Daniel's team has walked the hardest road in the league from twelfth place, and the new leaders have walked the softest to first. What remains is one Friday: the gentlest run-ins belong to Sefton's and Elliot's clubs, the harshest to Caleb's and Boyds Daniel's. The audit desk settled in July that slates don't move batting averages — the alibi is dead — but wins are another department, and the wins column is the one being contested Friday.

Hardest played slate first. Played = mean opponent win% in games not against the club, one entry per game; Left = mean current win% of the clubs still scheduled; vs top 4 = remaining games against the current top four. Every pair has now met at least once.
Section Nº 11 · The Value DeskNet hits above a league-average bat

Five seats turn, one of them awkward

Value = (average − league .560) × at-bats, and the Dream Team takes the best of it per round under the league's two-women rule. The fortnight turned over five of twelve seats — nearly half the room — and put Stafford Hammon atop the whole value ledger while his club fell out of first: the paradox of a man who did everything except win. The R6 seat now belongs to Charlie Williams, born 1958, who spent the fortnight outworking men his children's age.

The fortnight's biggest true-round climbs, then — below the heavy rule — the slides. Eighty-five of 144 players changed true round in one accounting period; a double week moves a lot of paper.
Section Nº 12 · The Full DocketAll 144 picks, snake order

The whole draft, marked to market

Every pick in original snake-draft order, revalued at the fortnight's close. True Rd is where the season's value says a player should have gone; Move is that verdict's change since the last edition; Gap is drafted round minus true round — green means a bargain, red means booked below cost — and League # is value rank out of 144. The season's totals: 82 picks stand justified, 26 of them priced to the exact round. The heavier lines start a new round.

The season, drawn to six points

Every club's season line at all six snapshots. The chart now shows the fortnight's cruelest joke in one picture: Stafford's team's batting line rose across the very period its club fell out of first, Jeremy's team climbed to meet its new standing, and Horatio's team keeps the highest line in the league from third place. Color marks those three; the label rail names everyone.

The chart's own numbers — season adjusted average at each snapshot, best current line first.

Methodology: stats and standings harvested from cpsoftball.com with the August 7, 2026 data (single "Current" season); the game book covers the full schedule, and the 108 completed finals reconcile exactly against the standings — every club's runs for, runs against, and record match to the digit, which is the only reason this paper trusts harvested scores. Adjusted average = (H − CO) ÷ AB, verified exact on all 144 rows; the league line stands at .560. The fortnight = games 15–18, played July 31 and August 7 and published by the league as a single snapshot, joined on (team, draft pick) between the July 24 and August 7 snapshots; a period's rate = (ΔH − ΔCO) ÷ ΔAB, and the swing is that rate minus the player's own season line at July 24. Because no snapshot exists between the two Fridays, batting for this period cannot be split by afternoon, and none of it is. Hits above the book (HAE) = ΔH − ΔCO − ΔAB × own prior line — the Bat of the Fortnight statistic; the Anvil is the worst swing on 4+ period at-bats; the Vacuum counts period caused outs with ties broken by season total; the Ghost is the highest-ranked player with zero period at-bats; the Iron Week is most period at-bats; the Ladder and the Chute are the extreme league-rank moves. The Rebound Ledger's cohort = swing ≤ −.300 on 4+ at-bats in games 13–14; REBOUNDED = a fortnight rate above the player's own July 24 line. Form glyphs read every period of the season against the player's own line with a ±.050 deadband, oldest first. Games back = (ΔW + ΔL) ÷ 2 against the leader; streaks and game records come from the game book. The Pythagorean expectation is the winning percentage a club's runs scored and allowed would normally earn — PF² ÷ (PF² + PA²) — and Luck is the actual winning percentage minus that: the wins (or losses) the run totals can't account for. SOS played = the mean of opponents' winning percentage in games not against the club, one entry per game; SOS left = the mean current winning percentage of the clubs still on the slate; the schedule-alibi audit (in the July 17 archive) is why no batting number on this page is ever schedule-adjusted. The chase lists the top four averages on 15+ at-bats ("back" = average gap × own at-bats); crown history uses 10+ at-bats per snapshot; weekly records keep their 10+ at-bat gate, and the records board is recomputed from every period every edition — a published-board tripwire flags any upstream data revision, and count records set across the double week carry their two-date span on the board. The arcs chart plots each club's season adjusted average at all six snapshots, x-axis spaced by real dates, y-axis .400–.640; three clubs are emphasized in color (validated for contrast and color-vision separation in both light and dark modes), every line is direct-labeled, and the full numbers sit in the table beneath it. Value = (adjusted average − league .560) × at-bats; true round = value rank dealt into rounds of twelve; the Dream Team takes best value per round under the league's two-women coed rule. Shortstops are tagged SS; their draft price includes defense this ledger cannot measure. All numbers are transcribed from analysis.py (run with --history --games --standings --prev-standings, plus --html-afternoon for every table, card, ticket, and the chart on this page) against 0807-stats.csv, 0807-standings.csv and 0807-schedule.csv — nothing is computed by hand.
