The crown changes hands

Cuervo Timpson caused his first out of the season and lost the batting title with it. The man who takes it wore it first.

He led this race for two straight editions, and he did not go quietly: fifteen-for-twenty-two that afternoon, heavy, honest work. But one of those at-bats erased a teammate — the first caused out of Cuervo Timpson's season — and the ledger is merciless about it. His line fell .864 to .788; his rank fell first to fourth, in one afternoon. The crown passes to Sefton Dockstader, at .816 — and it is a reclamation, not a coronation: Sefton led the very first edition of this paper, back on June 12, at .933. Curtis Knudson sits third. The analyst finds no conflict of interest and, once again, declines to recuse himself.

One more first for the front page: for the first time all season, nobody batted 1.000 on an afternoon. The 1.000 club is closed until further notice.

The afternoon, game by game

Every final, in the order the park played them. Bold club won. Tags are computed, not editorial: a 1-RUN game finished a run apart; an UPSET put a club six or more standings places over its opponent.

The shape of the afternoon: two of the twelve finished a single run apart, and two others put bottom-half clubs over top-four ones. Both upsets landed on contenders.

The afternoon's awards

No committees, no sentiment — every award below is computed from the box score, citation attached, runners-up in the small print. The Bat of the Afternoon is measured in hits above the book: what a player delivered beyond what his own season line predicted for that many at-bats.

Six weeks, twelve lines

The first chart this paper has ever run: every club's season batting line at all four snapshots. Three clubs carry color because the pennant race does; the other nine ride the gray rail, named on the right.

• Horatio's team is the only club that has climbed at every reading: .565, .598, .601, .616. The line does not wobble. It just goes.
• Jeremy's team drew a perfect round trip: from .597, up for a fortafternoon, and back to .597 — six weeks of climbing and descending to end exactly where they began. The standings beg to differ.
• Caleb's team is the flattest line in the picture: .560 to .584, no drama, first place. Some clubs surge. This one accumulates.
• On the rail: Boyds Daniel's club has climbed .412 → .532 since June 12 — the largest rise anywhere on the chart — and Michael's team touched .500 for the first time all season.

The same chart, in numbers

The Rebound Ledger

The last edition ended on a promise: fifteen players had just batted three hundred points or more below their own season line, and games 11 and 12 would decide whether that was a bad week or the first draft of a bad month. The ledger is in: five rebounded, eight fell again, two never got a swing.

• Evan Williams answered loudest. 6-for-7 against the .675 line he had spent a fortafternoon betraying — the deepest faller on the old list is the best comeback on the new one.
• Sean Hammon's fairy tale does not get a fourth chapter. Hitless on six tries, season line down to .429. This paper tracked the round-12 steal up the mountain in June and has now walked him all the way back down; the mean he was regressing toward is above him.
• Two names carry the column forward. Lincoln Wood and Pauline Timpson sat the whole afternoon — their hearing moves to the next slate.

The Standings

Nine wins leads the league three times over. The table gains two columns this paper has never had — games back and streak — because for the first time, it holds every final score of every game played.

• The pile-up. Caleb's team holds first at 9-2-1; three clubs sit half a game back at 9-3; fifth is 1½ out. That is not a race so much as traffic.
• And it is almost entirely unlitigated. The four clubs at the top have met just three times in six weeks. Jeremy's team owns the only win over Horatio's; Horatio's club has beaten both Caleb's and Stafford's; every other pairing is still theoretical.
• The quietest hot team in the league. Jeremy's team has won six straight — tying the season's longest run — and extended it this week while batting .464 against their own .621 line, worst on the afternoon. Luck says +.186. The scoreboard declines to comment.
• The invoice: first installment received. Stafford's team opened last edition at +.243 luck, the league's largest. It now reads +.200, and the club slid second to fourth without playing badly. The balance remains outstanding.
• The league still owes the last-place club. Ephraims Daniel's team is 1-11 on the points profile of a .334 club — luck −.251, the deepest debt on the books. Somebody should tell them their captain just won Bat of the Afternoon.

Nobody at the top has been tested

Twelve games into a twenty-game season, the table has a confession to make: its clubs have not been playing the same league. A late supplement from the schedule desk.

Every club has played twelve games — but not the same twelve. Average together the winning percentages of the teams each club has actually faced, and the table tilts: no club in the top four has played opposition better than .472, and Stafford's team has had the easiest draw in the league — its opponents win at a .390 clip. Fifth-place Sefton's club has faced the toughest, .626. The road ahead runs the other way: the teams left on Sefton's schedule are winning at just .281, the easiest finish anyone has, with not one game left against the top four — while Boyds Daniel's club closes against teams winning at .714. And the race is finally about to litigate itself: Caleb's and Stafford's clubs, who have never met, play three times in the last four afternoons — and so do Jeremy's and Boyds Daniel's.

How to read the table. Each row is one club. The two win% columns grade its opposition: the average winning percentage of the teams it has already played, and of the teams still to come — an average schedule would sit near .500, and higher means a harder road. The last three columns show how uneven the pairings are: how many of the club's remaining games come against the current top four, the three opponents it has not seen at all yet, and the four it has already seen twice.

• Ten rivalries run three rounds. Of the sixty-six possible pairings, twenty-two meet once this season, thirty-four twice, and ten three times. The game book saved its heaviest paper for August.
• First place took the hard road forward. Caleb's team plays six of its last eight against the clubs directly chasing it. Boyds Daniel's club, seventh, drew seven of eight against the top four — by either count, the stiffest finish in the league.
• The contenders' roads diverge. Among the four clubs at the top, Horatio's has much the gentlest run home — a single top-four game left on its schedule — while Caleb's, Stafford's and Jeremy's spend most of August on one another.
• The bottom carried the top's weight. After Sefton's, the next four toughest schedules played so far belong to clubs sitting ninth or worse. Those records were bought at full price.

The schedule alibi

Every cold bat in this league retains the same defense attorney: look who we were playing. The desk pulled the game book and ran it down. The alibi does not survive.

The test is simple. Call a defense easy if it gives up more runs per game than the league average of 11.28, hard if it gives up fewer. If the excuse were real, players would hit better in the weeks they spent against easy defenses. They hit worse: in those weeks the league swung +.002 above its own season lines, and in weeks against the hard defenses, +.022. Twenty points of swing, pointing the wrong way. Whatever separates a hot week from a cold one out there, it is not the other dugout.

• The clubs tell the same story. In weeks spent against the easy defenses, clubs batted four points of week rate under their own season lines (−.004); in weeks against the hard ones, thirty-two points over (+.032).
• The runs agree too. Measured against each defense's runs allowed in its other games, the league scored 11.63 a game on the stingier half of defenses and 11.01 on the more generous half.
• Why the alibi fails. Twelve games is a short book. A club's runs-allowed figure is still mostly a record of which offenses it happened to meet — an honest account of what happened, useless as a prophecy of anyone's batting.
• What this desk cannot do. The stat sheet arrives one week at a time, not one game at a time — and every afternoon is two games — so no player's line can ever be pinned to a single opponent. The finest thing the book can say is "that week, against those teams," and that is exactly what this desk measures.

The defense ledger, for the record

One row per club: the runs it gives up in an average game, and the runs it scores. The less a club allows, the better its defense — D1 marks the stingiest in the league, D12 the most generous.

The crown, re-read

Same yardstick, applied to the top of the batting race. For each contender, the last column asks: how many runs per game do the defenses he actually batted against give up? Higher means an easier road. The order of the race survives its own audit — the man wearing the crown faced the hardest defenses of the four, and the man sitting third enjoyed the most generous. The desk prints the table and moves on.

Case file: the fairy tale

The suspicion around the league held that Sean Hammon's ten-for-thirteen June was a gift of the fixture list — that he was hitting the league's pushover defenses. The game book acquits him. The table below walks his season stretch by stretch: what he hit, and who his club was playing at the time. The hot stretch came against Caleb's and Boyds Daniel's clubs — the second- and fourth-stingiest defenses in the league — plus Stafford's and Jeremy's. His club has not met Michael's team all season. And the one stretch that did include the league's most generous defense, Ephraims Daniel's club, is exactly where the line began to fall. Averaged over his whole season, the defenses he faced give up 11.19 runs a game — a rounding error from the league average. The file on the fairy tale stays closed; the audit merely corrects the cause of death. It was the mean, not the matchups.

• And the friendliest schedule in the league is being wasted. No regular has batted against more generous defenses than Becky Wood, the draft's #144 — hers give up 12.36 runs a game, taken together — and the season line reads five-for-twenty. The audit finds no alibi there either, in either direction.

The Value Desk

The full 144-row docket rests this edition — it lives on in the July 10 archive — and the desk kept what matters: the Dream Team, and who moved. Value = (average − league average) × at-bats, net hits above a league-average bat; a true round is that value dealt back into rounds of twelve.

The churn

• The market repriced a whole afternoon at once: 85 of 144 true rounds moved. The biggest climb belongs to Ephraims Daniel Dockstader, R9 to R6; the biggest slide to Lexi Timpson, R4 to R8.
• Four Dream Team seats turned over. Gideon Hammon takes round 1 back from Claude Timpson, Paul Hammon claims round 8, Charles Williams round 6 — and round 12 now belongs to Sharon Hammon, in for Sean Hammon, whose seat did not survive the afternoon.
• The first family changed on the same afternoon as the crown. The Williamses — twenty of them — pass the Knudsons for the best family average, .622 to .615. The analyst notes his family held the title for exactly one edition, and offers no further comment.

The Records Board

One record fell on the afternoon. Horatio's team batted .700 — 52-for-70 with three caused outs — and took Best Team Week off Jeremy's club, which had held it at .667 for exactly one edition. The board also grows four game categories, now that this paper finally owns every final score. The book is recomputed from scratch every edition; nothing on it is taken on faith.

• Two marks survived by a whisker — the Williams family's .684 afternoon pulled up just short of the Knudson family record, and from the wrong direction, Jeremy's club brushed the worst-team-week line that Gideon's team set a fortafternoon ago.
• Headlining the new game book: the 28–4 afternoon Horatio's club hung on Sefton's back on July 3 — a 24-run margin nothing before or since has come close to.

What the next slate decides

For once the schedule is the storyline. Every matchup below is straight from the league's book; the stakes are straight from the pages above.

• The pile-up litigates itself. Caleb's team plays both Jeremy's and Stafford's clubs in a single evening — two of the three top-four meetings that have never happened, back to back. First place can clear the traffic or join it.
• The crown math is a tenth of a hit wide. Sefton Dockstader defends against Seth's and Ephraims Daniel's clubs; Paul Hammon, 0.1 back, gets Boyds Daniel's club and then first place. One good evening settles it. One caused out settles it the other way — ask the last champion.
• The ledger's second hearing. Eight names fell again on July 17 and the rebound column returns next edition to say which of them stood up — and Horatio Williams, the Ghost of the Weeklies, presumably bats while his club draws the soft half of the card.
