Eight losses, no shortstop, and a borrowed bat that ended the argument

Boyds Daniel's team had not won since July 17 — a drought long enough that the club stopped playing games and began serving sentences. Eight of them. Then, in the last hour of the last afternoon of the year, they beat Stafford's team 16–15, and the swing that did it came from a man on loan from another roster, because their own first-round shortstop was nowhere to be seen. Sources place Levi Knudson at a toupee fitting. The desk has not verified this and has no plans to.

• Levi Knudson: first round, shortstop, unaccounted for. He is the last child his mother produced, and he kept a pacifier in active service until somewhere near his fifth birthday — the first documented case of the man holding on to something well past the point anyone expected, a habit his hairline has since declined to inherit. The portrait above is what the trade calls a period piece. His club won the biggest game of its season without him, and he will hear about that every December for the remainder of his natural life.
• Connor Williams was the best player on a field he had no business being on. Nine times up, nine hits — nobody in this league got more without making an out — for a club that did not draft him and had him for exactly one afternoon. The desk is further authorized to report that Mr. Williams was married two weeks ago and, this being the crick, remains entirely available — congratulations to the happy couple, and to whoever is next; that he arrived at his present dimensions without the aid of medicinal steroids, prescribed or otherwise; and that he is, by unanimous finding of everyone this desk consulted, remarkably handsome. The 1.000 Club reviewed all of the above and turned him away over a single caused out. The 1.000 Club is not a serious institution.

The Divide is drawn at the altitude of the league's lowest-batting first-round pick, and it is recomputed from scratch every edition — the line moves, the namesake can change, and neither is ever assumed. The season closes with both exactly where they were. It still falls to Elliot Hammon at .551. Eleven of the twelve first-round picks finish at .649 or better. The twelfth draws the Divide.

• The third generation attends in person. Three of them watch from frames. Elliot's father, Carl, prefers the sideline, where — between explanations of why he is now far too old to play this game anywhere — he has made himself known to the officials. One week he was certain his son was safe at first. The umpire had him out. Neither has revised. Great-grandfather in one frame, great-grandmother in the next, a great-aunt in the third, father on the bleachers with opinions, and the Divide has not moved an inch. Attendance is not a batting statistic.
• He had a good afternoon. It did not matter. On the last day of the year Hammon went 5-for-7 — a genuinely fine afternoon, better than most of his — and the Divide moved three thousandths. That is the trouble with a line drawn across 69 at-bats: it has heard your excuses already. A season is not a mood. It is an average.
• The encouraging precedent, freely offered. This instrument has outlived one namesake already — the first batted his way clean off it and up the table, which remains the only known cure and is available to anyone. The women above the line continue to draft cheap and bat expensive; Violet Barlow closes the season a further rung clear of the man who sits beneath it.
• The house note. A seventh-round pick in Hammon's own clubhouse, Larry Stubbs, finished #34 in the league — thirty-six places above the captain who drafted him, on a roster the captain assembled personally. The desk raises this not to wound but because the next section is about exactly that, and it seemed rude to let him read it cold.

Which families could actually hit

Nine surnames account for a hundred and seventeen of the league's hundred and forty-four players. Twelve captains spent an evening in June believing they were assembling rosters; the table below suggests they were redistributing cousins. Ranked by family batting average — the mean of a household's season lines, which is the fair way to weigh three relatives against thirty-two. Nobody drafted anybody here. You get the relatives you get.

• The top line. The editor is a Knudson. The desk checked the arithmetic twice and found it, regrettably, correct.
• Thirty-two Hammons. Eleven of the twelve clubhouses employ at least one. Michael's team is the exception and has never explained itself.
• The winning family is one of the smallest. Eight players over five clubhouses, no more than a couple in any one room — so no captain assembled this and no clubhouse gets to claim it. It is a surname that hits, which is the one advantage in this newspaper that cannot be drafted, traded, subbed for or explained.
• The Cawleys finish last and keep the record anyway. Three players, three clubs, the smallest household on the board — and they still hold the best family week this league has ever recorded, set in July and untouched since. Both facts live in the same drawer. The desk declines to reconcile them.

The ledger, split down the middle

The board above counts every surname together, which is the fair way to weigh a household and the useless way to settle an argument inside one. So: the same arithmetic run twice, once over each half, on the same gate both times — two or more of that half and you make the board.

• Eight households appear on both boards. All eight sit higher on the men's side, and the interesting part is that it is not the same drop twice. The Barlows split closest, seventy-three thousandths apart; the Dockstaders widest at two hundred and twenty. Same surname, three times the distance.
• Three women's households out-hit the foot of the men's board. The Dargers and the Cawleys hold the last two rungs of a board twelve deep. The top three households of women bat above both of them.
• The Timpsons are the largest women's household in the league. Six of them over five clubhouses — more than any single club carries — and they finish fifth of eight. Volume is not the edge on either board: the biggest men's household is twenty-five deep and finishes fourth.
• Nobody is guessed into a column. Sidney, Kendall, Leslie, Avery, J Daunt and Emmerson have never been confirmed either way and sit on neither board. Two honest tables beat one tidy one.

Three top-half finishes, four spotless seasons, six hundred and ninety-seven hits

Thirty women played in this league this season and put six hundred and ninety-seven hits on the board between them. Three finished in the top half of a hundred and forty-four. Four went the whole year without causing a single out — there were only twenty-four such seasons in the book.

Ranked by league position, best first. Every woman here took at least twenty-eight at-bats, so nothing below is a small sample dressed up as a season.

• Violet Barlow finished fifty-first of a hundred and forty-four. Thirty hits in forty-seven trips, two caused outs all year, and a finish above the lowest first-round pick in the league. Deborah Timpson and Maureen Williams are up there with her, all three above the Divide. Thirteen of these thirty closed the year valued above the round they were taken in — a market judgment, not a compliment.
• Nobody gave back less. Lizzy Horsley went seventy-four at-bats without a single caused out; only five players in the book carried a bigger clean sheet. Maureen Williams, Sharon Hammon and Becky Wood also finished the year without one.
• The fourteenth-heaviest workload in the book. Marissa Williams took eighty-four at-bats — more than a hundred and thirty players and seven of the twelve captains — and finished at exactly .500.
• The two longest climbs start at the bottom. Sarah Timpson opened at .143 and closed at .467, thirty-six places up the league. Angeline Williams began the year ranked last in the book, outright, and finished one hundred and ninth.
• The cleanest hands belong to the last name called. Becky Wood finished thirtieth of thirty and finished without causing a single out — thirty-six trips, nothing ever handed back, which is more than ten of the twelve captains managed. Still technically a bargain; the technicality is now structural.

The whole season, drawn to seven points

Every club's batting line at every snapshot of the year, finished. Three clubs carry color because three clubs tell the season: Sefton's team began above everyone in June and was still there in August, which is where the batting champion came from; Boyds Daniel's team climbed further than any club in the league and finished exactly where it started, at the bottom of the chart; and Jeremy's team slid off its July peak and won the whole thing regardless. The label rail names all twelve. Everyone else rides grey — that is emphasis, not ranking.

The account closes in the black, and not by batting

This desk has issued a statement of account to whoever holds first place since July, and the ledger has followed the chair rather than the man ever since. It settles here. Jeremy's team finishes on top having lost the one fixture the last edition of this paper billed as the decider, which appears on its own statement below under results. The balance due, as ever, is luck: the daylight between a club's record and what its runs can explain. The account is rendered below and closed.

• The shortstop who appears nowhere on this statement. Jeremy's team played the season without its first-round shortstop. Boyds Jeremy came to the plate thirty-three times all year, and not once between the July tenth and August seventh snapshots — the exact stretch in which his club climbed to first. The desk is told the position was covered on loan by Sefton Dockstader, shortstop of another clubhouse entirely, who finished the season as runner-up for the batting crown and tied for the most valuable bat in the league. The book credits a substitute's at-bats to his own slot, so not one of them is entered above. The best player this club fielded all year is an asset it was never billed for and cannot show.
• The desk notes the arrangement and declines to price it. Who stood where is not a column this league keeps — the loan is reported here because it was reported to the desk, and it changes no figure on the account above. Every line in that document is computed from the book exactly as the book was kept. The statement is correct. It is simply not the whole story, which is true of most statements.
• One line item does not carry over. Substitution is a regular-season arrangement, and the desk is given to understand it does not travel to the bracket. When the games start mattering, the first-place club will be fielding its own first-round shortstop — the one whose at-bats are on its roster rather than on loan from down the road. This newspaper prints no bracket and offers no forecast. It will simply be watching, with an interest it declines to describe as neutral.

Seven acts later, the epidemic names a champion

The season's last afternoon was, mercifully, one of its cleaner ones — the league handed back twenty-eight caused outs at a rate below its own season pace. It settled nothing kindly. The three-way tie at thirty did not break the way ties usually break: nobody pulled clear, a fourth club walked past all three. Stafford's team closes the year as the league's worst at thirty-seven, having given back eight on the final afternoon alone. Gideon's team — sole occupant of last place from June onward, patient zero of this entire tragedy — finishes second worst, which is the closest thing to a recovery anyone in this clubhouse has managed and is not very close.

The ten best bats nobody wanted

Eighty-four of this league's players were drafted in the sixth round or later — the part of the board where captains are guessing and everybody knows it. These are the ten who finished highest in the league anyway. True Rd is where a season of batting says they should have gone; Gap is the distance between that verdict and where they actually went. Every line on this table is green. Not one of these players was drafted anywhere near what they turned out to be worth.

• The ninth round won the batting title. Every captain in this league passed on Shem Hammon eight times. The eighth round produced the man who finished #18. Somewhere around the middle of a draft, twelve grown adults collectively stopped paying attention, and the desk has the receipts printed above.
• The sixth round did the heavy lifting. Charles Williams and Wesley Williams carried 99 and 96 at-bats respectively — two of the largest workloads in the league — at rates their draft position said were impossible. Value is not only rate. It is rate you keep showing up for.
• Sefton's clubhouse simply drafted better than yours. Three of these ten belong to one club, which also holds the batting champion and the runner-up. The desk declines to call this luck on the grounds that it happened three times in the cheap rounds alone.

Where everybody actually ended up

The table readers ask for more than any other, and the only edition of it that will ever be final: every pick of the draft in original snake order, marked to market at the close of the regular season. True Rd is where the year's batting says a player should have gone; Move is how that verdict shifted since the last edition; Gap is drafted round minus true round — green is a bargain, red is a bill — and League # is value rank out of 144. The final accounting: 83 of the draft's picks stand justified, 23 of them priced to the exact round. Heavier lines start a new round.
